Place Vendôme is a square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris located to the north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Église de la Madeleine. Its regular architecture and pedimented screens canted across the corners give the rectangular Place Vendôme the aspect of an octagon. Napoleon erected the present column to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz.

The avenue runs 3 km through the 8th arrondissement in northwestern Paris, from the Place de la Concorde in the east, with its obelisk, to the Place Charles de Gaulle in the west, location of the Arc de Triomphe. The Champs-Elysées forms part of the line of the Axe historique. The name refers to the Elysian Fields, the place of the blessed in Greek mythology.
