La región de nueva Aquitania, creada en 2014, por la fusión de varias entidades territoriales del sudoeste de Francia, cubre un quinto de Francia y tiene su capital en Burdeos.
Nueva Aquitania se extiende desde el Valle del Loira a los Pirineos y agrupa tres entidades territoriales: Aquitania, Limousin y Poitou-Charentes.
A su vez esta formado por doce departamentos: Charente, Charente Marítimo, Corrèze, Creuse, Dordoña, Gironda, Landas, Lot-et-Garonne, Pirineos Atlánticos, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne y Haute-Vienne.
Entre las ciudades más destacadas están: Burdeos, Bayona, Limoges, Poitiers, Pau y La Rochelle.
Es la región de mayor producción agrícola y vinícola de Francia y destacan entre sus denominaciones de origen mundialmente conocidas: Burdeos, Coñac y Armañac.
Nueva aquitania incluye lo que era, y así se llamó durante unos meses Aquitania-Lemosín-Poitou-Charentes, siendo el nombre de Nueva Aquitania oficial desde el 28 de septiembre de 2016

Hay que simplificar nombres para recordarlos mejor (los que no vivan allí); lo mejor es convertirlos en acrónimos, como “Région PACA” (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur)
