The eye of Irma is a little less distinct in geostationary satellite
images this morning, which suggests that the intensity of the
hurricane may be fluctuating yet again. However, the initial
wind speed is maintained at 100 kt for this advisory, which is close
to a consensus of the various objective and subjective satellite
intensity estimates. The first reconnaissance mission, a NOAA P-3
Hurricane Hurricane aircraft, is scheduled to depart Barbados for
tail Doppler radar mission into Irma late this afternoon and should
provide additional information on Irma's intensity by this evening.
A strong high pressure ridge over the central Atlantic is steering
Irma west-southwestward or 255/12 kt. This general motion with
some reduction in forward speed is expected during the next day or
so. After that time, Irma is forecast to turn westward, then
west-northwestward in about 72 hours as it approaches the western
portion of the ridge. The various consensus aids are generally a
little slower than the previous advisory, but there cross-track
differences are small. As a result, the updated NHC track is very
similar to the previous advisory, and is close to a consensus of the
ECMWF, GFS, UKMET, and HWRF, but is not as far south as the
latest runs of the UKMET or ECMWF.
Irma is forecast to move over slightly warmer SSTs and into a
moistening mid-level environment. These conditions, along with a
favorable upper-level wind pattern, should allow for gradual
strengthening during the next 2 to 3 days. However, eyewall
replacement cycles could result in fluctuations in intensity
during the next several days.
While Irma is currently a small hurricane, the guidance suggests it
should grow in size during the next 72 h. This will affect how soon
watches may be issued for portions of the Leeward and Virgin
Islands, and interests on those islands should continue to monitor
Irma's progress.
KEY MESSAGES:
1. Irma is expected to be a major hurricane when it moves near or
over the northeastern Leeward Islands by the middle of this week,
and could cause dangerous wind, storm surge, and rainfall impacts,
along with rough surf and rip currents on some islands. Hurricane
and tropical storm watches will likely be issued for some of these
islands later today or tonight. Residents in these areas should
monitor the progress of Irma and listen to advice given by
officials.
2. Direct impacts from Irma are also possible in the Virgin Islands
and Puerto Rico later this week, and tropical storm or hurricane

Si no recuerdo mal, hablando con amigos de allí, me comentaron que por ej, una fractura de tabique nasal rondaba los R30.000. No me quiero imaginar algo más grave y de urgencia.
Yo te recomiendo ir bien cubierto.

Good medical care is very expensive and a patient generally has to prove that he will be able to pay for treatment before it is administered. A simple operation, such as an appendectomy, may cost approximately R15 000. It is recommended that immigrants take out medical/life insurance upon arrival in the country. Several excellent schemes are available. Contributions are calculated according to the ages, number and medical histories of applicants.
Travellers are recommended to take out medical insurance before their trip.
Malaria and bilharzia are diseases endemic to certain parts of South Africa. Before visiting the country, foreigners are advised to take precautions in this regard.
According to the United Nations AIDS Report, released in June 1998, South Africa is the country with the fastest growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world. Approximately 8,6% of the total population is estimated to be HIV positive, with more than 1 500 new infections occurring daily. An aggressive media campaign educates society about the disease and all blood products are screened by health services to prevent accidental infection of patients.

...gran parte de sus costos con dadivas a nivel privado (de edificios, laboratorios o, simplemente, contribuciones en efectivo). Graduados con mucho exito economico y con mucho afecto a su alma mater suelen contribuir enormemente a la expansion, costos y mantenimiento de las unviersidades. De ahi que la mayoria de los edificios lleven el nombre de un contribuidor. Yo no puedo hacer nada muy espectacular por mi alma mater, pero si contribuyo todos los anyos a UCLA como miembro del grupo de los ex-graduados (lo que se llama el "alumnni association"). Y, hay que decirlo, el alumni association de UCLA me persigue por todas partes para tratar de engancharme a contribuir. Hasta cuando vivia en Espanya, no se ni como, dieron conmigo para mandarme cartas todos los meses instandome a matricularme en el grupo de ex-alumnos donantes, tratando de ponerme en contacto con otros graduados de UCLA en Espanya (hay algunos por ahi) para que hicieramos recaudaciones etc e intentnado sonsacarme con programas especiales de estudios postgraduados, conferencias por personajes interesantes, viajes organizados a diferentes partes del mundo dirigidos por lumbreras en la historia de la China o la ecologia africana (a precios de escandalo que con un sueldo de profesor universitario en Espanya no podria nunca pagar), billetes mas economicos de lo normal para ver la actuaccion del NYC Ballet o la Filarmonica de Filadelfia en el campus (lo cual no era muy probable cuando la actuacion tenia lugar en Los Angeles y yo vivia en Espanya) y cosas de ese stilo. Al fin capitule y ahora les mando un chequcito todos los anyos, pero ellos no cejan... Son insaciables, cuando no es la becas de los refugiados haitianos es el laboratorio de vacunas contra en AIDS o los cursos para postgraduados para crear vias de desarrollo en paises con un nivel economico bajo...
Como se paga la unversidad? Pues bien...
1- El que tiene dinero, paga la matricula como Dios manda y se acabo...
2- El que no tiene dinero, y tiene buenas notas en high school o se ha distinguido de alguna forma en sus estudios, tiene montones de programas de becas para escoger en miles de universidades diferentes. Hay, literalmente, cientos de miles... Pero, bueno, hay que ser buen estudiante y, ademas, venir de una famila con pocos recursos--no dan becas a personas que proceden de una familia con un buen nivel economico
3- "Ahorrar" para que los chicos estudien. Los bancos etc. tienen programas especiales para ahorrar una cantidad de dinero, digamos, $100 o $200 al mes (que no es tanto para una familia aqui) durante la vida de un hijo o hija con el objetivo de cubrir los costos de estudios unniversitarios mas tarde cuando los chicos se graduen de high school. La inversion es deducible de impuestos y tiene otros beneficios pues el estado "pone algo"
4- Aplicar a un "student loan" o prestamo estudiantil (algo que hice yo). El gobierno, o un banco, te "presta" una cantidad de dinero todos los anyos para cubrir los costos de matricula y residencia (si la universidad no esta en la ciudad donde vive la famila del estudiante) con un interes minimo y el estudiante se compromete a ir pagando el prestamo todos los anyos despues que termine su estudios. La cantidad a devolver se reduce en un porcentaje muy alto si el estudiante se dedica, despues de terminar la carrera, a la educacion, la investigacion o algun tipo de servicio al estado como, por ejemplo, programas de desarrollo en areas del...
