NUMEA, ex-"Port-de-France", proviene del kanak y podría significar "península propicia para la pesca". Es la capital de NUEVA CALEDONIA (territorio semiautónomo francés que podría lograr la independencia en un par de años), un archipiélago situado en la MELANESIA, entre Australia y Fiyi. Su aglomeración supera los 150.000 hab., siendo la mayor ciudad francófona del Pacífico y está al sur de la mayor isla (Grande Terre). Su arrecife, que incluye Île des Pins, sería el 2° mayor del mundo tras la Gran Barrera de Coral australiana.
