Cuenta la leyenda que el dios griego Alfeo se enamoró perdidamente de la ninfa Aretusa, que había prometido permanecer virgen el resto de su vida y se negó a aceptar sus pretensiones. Como el dios no se daba por vencido, la ninfa huyó a la isla de Ortigia y se transformó en la fuente que lleva su nombre. Alfeo, entonces, se transformó a su vez en río, y cuentan que las aguas del dios-río se internan en la tierra y viajan desde el Peloponeso, en Grecia, hasta Ortigia, en Sicilia, para unirse a las de su amada.
