ELLA
En Ella, al sur de Badulla, se encuentran las espectaculares cataratas de Ravana Ella, a pesar de que sólo miden 9 metros, parecen interminables a la vista.
BUDURUWAGALA
En Buduruwagala, se encuentran siete imágenes colosales esculpidas en la roca, una de ellas la de más altura de Sri Lanka, fechadas entre los siglos VIII- X A.C. Que merecen la pena visitar.
Buduruwagala is located about 5 km from the Wellawaya on the Thanamalwila road. The name Buduruwagala means “the rock with the statue of Buddha” And this is exactly what it is. Seven figured are carved in this rock with a massive 51 foot Buddha statue in the Abhaya Mudra gesture at the centre. The rock it self has shape of a kneeling elephant with its head own. Although there is no documented information about this site in the ancient scriptures, it is now believed this carvings were done during the last days of the Anuradhapura period. (between 8 - 10 Century). These carvings are of the Mahayana Buddhist style and similar to the statues at Dova Temple.
The tallest Buddha statue in the world was the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan until the destruction of this ancient monument by the Taliban in March 2001. The Buduruwagala Buddha Statue is now considered the tallest in the world. The centre statue is flanked by two statues which each about 40 foot in height. These two again flanked by two figures, one female and the other male. The centre figure on the left (as you stand in front) still has most of the plaster and some paint which has been applied by the ancients. This centre figure is thought to be of the figure of Avaloktheeshvara Bodhisattva (the manifestation of all the Buddha’s' compassion in the Mahayana Buddhist teaching - In Theravada Buddhism Avaloktheeshvara is known as Lokesvara). He is identified by the small image of the meditating Buddha in the crown that he wares. This image can be clearly seen the carving. The bare breasted female figure on the right to this is thought be Thara Devi. She is carved in a ‘thivanka’ position (bent in 3 places). The other is thought to be their son Prince Sudana. On the right is 3 similar figures. And the centre figure is thought to be the Maithri Bodhisattva. He is the fifth Buddha for this eon. On the left is the Vajirapani Bodhisattva ( Sanskrit Vajra : thunderbolt/diamond, Pani : lit in the hand). He is one of the earliest bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism. He is generally represented with a diamond club in his hand)

DOWA TEMPLE
Dowa Cave Temple is located 6km from Bandarawela on Badulla-Bandarawella highway. Nestled amidst the hills, the historic cave temple complex was once the sanctuary for King Walagamba. The temple has a beautiful ornamental gateway that attracts visitors. It has a 38 ft Buddha image sculptured from a rock and some paintings belonging to the Kandyan era, depicting various Jataka stories.
DIYALUMA WATERFALL
Diyaluma is the 2nd highest waterfall of Sri Lanka with a height of 559 foot. Fed by the Poonagala Oya, the fall is13 km from Wellawaya town and 6 km from Koslanda in the Hills. The fall has a folklore attached to it. According to a legend Gods, seeing the heartbreak of a prince whose runaway romance ended in the death of his sweetheart whom he had tried to haul over the Diyaluma precipice, created this beautiful cascade to weep forever in the wilderness.

UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK
Udawalawe National Park is renowned for its outstanding scenic beauty and wealth of faunal species, particularly mammals and birds. It has become a tourist attraction throughout the year as it is blesses with unique funa and flora while the possibility to view the elephants at close range has become another main attraction. The park serves the dual purpose of ensuring a perennial supply of silt free water to the reservoir and providing a refuge for wildlife displaced by the opening up of land for agriculture and other purposes in the lower reaches of the Walawe Ganga.
UDAWALAWE ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE
Uda Walawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Sri Lanka
The Elephant Transit Home owned by the Department of Wild Life Conservation (DWLC) was established on October 6, 1995 at the Udawalawe National Park.
24th of September 2003 the elephant transit home opened, completely funded by the Born Free Federation of UK, who also funds post-release studies run by the University of Colombo, monitoring the orphans with the help of radio collars once they have been returned to the wild.The difference between Ath Athuru Sevena and the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala is that at the Transit Home these baby elephants once cared for are released to the wilds when they reach a certain age.

STILT FISHING
An old tradition around Sri Lanka, stilt fishing had disappeared after the devastating tsunami that hit the country and other parts of the Indian Ocean, but soon the people returned to their customs, and now you can spot them sitting on their uncomfortable stilts, hoping to catch something.
Though they may be beautiful to look at, stilt fishermen have it rough. They spend hours sitting on a thin plank, hoping to catch one or two fish about 5 cm-long, that they sell for about 2 cents each. The rough waves keep the big fish away, so they sometimes have to settle for te smallest catch. But it’s a small price to pay in order to preserve centuries-old traditions.

GALLE
Galle durante el siglo XV, fue un puerto para las flotas de barcos extranjeros (chinos, holandeses y británicos), que dejaron su huella tanto en el puerto como en sus alrededores. En el antiguo puerto los buceadores pueden encontrar restos de objetos relacionados con los barcos, como: diversos artefactos, cascos persas, cerámicas holandesas, etc. En Galle los monumentos arquitectónicos más significativos son: Una iglesia Holandesa que es el mayor exponente de arquitectura religiosa del periodo holandés, un gran faro, una mezquita de extraño diseño que ha adaptado en la fachada motivos del estilo neorrenacentista. Podemos encontrar muchas casas coloniales, la mayoría de ellas en buen estado de conservación la maoyor parte de los antiguos edificios han sido restaurados y actualmente están destinados a oficinas gubernamentales o residencias. El arte y la arquitectura es el mismo que hace cientos de años en la zona, la característica principal es la utilización de madera en las decoraciones. Incluso hoy en día, Galle es un puerto donde se encuentran modernos barcos. La fortaleza tiene dos museos: el museo marítimo nacional y el museo nacional, ambos exponen la herencia del país, concediendo mayor importancia a las regiones marítimas y a las colecciones coloniales.

Ya te cuento a la vuelta, por lo que he ido buscando tiene unos monumentos impresionantes y también me apetece mucho el tema de los safaris y ver animales en libertad.

La idea es irme más o menos 20/25 días (en agosto 2011), así que tendré tiempo de conocerla bastante (ya he estado en la India dos veces, un mes en el sur de India con Goa y otro mes en el norte, y aunque tengo que volver a otras zonas de la India -nunca se llega a conocer del todo-, me quedaba esa "espinita" de visitar la "lágrima de la la India").

Nosotros a la semana que viene salimos hacia Sri Lanka para hacer un circuito de 17 días, todo visitas culturas y de naturaleza, prescindimos de hacer estancia en playa.

Yo me voy en agosto 22 días (con Viajes Años Luz)... A nosotros nos coincide con el Festival Esala Perahera en Kandy, que dicen que es fantástico, y además, sí que haremos algunos días de playita para relajarnos, snorkel, buceo....
