Ford axes Bridgend plant months after warning Brexit would destroy UK car industry
At least 1,700 jobs will be immediately affected by the shutdown, along with many more at companies in the supply chain.
The company is not alone in announcing the closure of its plants, with Honda also due to shut its Swindon plant in 2021, costing workers thousands of jobs.
Nissan also reversed a decision to build its new X-Trail vehicle at its Sunderland plant, which has a 7,000-strong workforce.
Land Rover, owned by India’s Tata Motors, announced a plan to cut 4,500 jobs in a bid to reduce costs, most of which are expected to be in the UK.
Theresa May will officially step down as the leader of the Conservative Party on Friday, but will remain as prime minister until her successor is chosen.
She announced her resignation two weeks ago, saying it was a matter of deep regret that she had been unable to deliver Brexit.
Eleven Conservative MPs are vying to replace her as party leader and, ultimately, prime minister.
The winner of the contest is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.
Mrs May remains acting party leader during the leadership election process.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives fell to third place in the Peterborough by-election, behind winners Labour and the Brexit Party in second place, in what is traditionally a Tory-Labour marginal seat.
Rudd says choosing Johnson as PM would lead to general election

Selecting Boris Johnson or another hard Brexiter to be Conservative party leader is a vote for an early general election, Amber Rudd has warned as the crowded contest finally begins in earnest.

Mr Johnson has won a High Court challenge against a court summons over claims the EU receives £350 million a week from the UK and that Brexit would divert the cash to be pumped into the NHS.

"A "dramatic" fall in car production and an easing of stockpiling by manufacturers meant the economy shrank in April, official figures show.
The economy contracted 0.4% from the month before, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The contraction meant growth for the three months to April slowed to 0.3%.
Factory shutdowns designed to cope with disruption from a March Brexit slashed UK car production in April by nearly half, the industry said last month.
BMW's Mini factory in Oxford brought forward its summer maintenance shutdown to April to minimise any disruption surrounding Brexit. Other manufacturers' annual stoppages were also brought forward."

Bank of England considers interest-rate rise
The Bank of England is considering going against the tide of prevalent monetary policy to raise interest rates.
The UK last raised interest rates from 0.5% to 0.75% in August 2018, the second time since the 2008 financial crisis. The European Central Bank announced the second wave of quantitative easing while the US Federal Reserve is projected to cut interest rates more than once before the end of the year.
Haldane seems to be pushing in the opposite direction. The UK has a tight labour market and the lowest unemployment in 40 years. Wages are beginning to surge beyond the inflation rate, although they far-lug behind pre-crisis levels.
Very Canadian-like!]

Enjoy!
