The following is a Situation Update about the Flooding in Thailand issued by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on 19th September 2011:

Certain areas of some provinces in north and central Thailand, such as Sing Buri, and Kamphaeng Phet as well as a few coastal areas in southern Thailand, have been affected by floods due to seasonal heavy rains. The floods are mainly affecting land in low-lying agricultural areas and adjacent to major waterways such as the Chao Phraya River. Occasional flash floods are occurring in some mountainous areas as a result of runoff from the heavy rains. The flooding is expected to subside within the next several days as weather conditions improve.

The current flooding is having little impact on tourism. Most tourist attractions throughout Thailand, including Sukhothai and Pattaya, have not been affected by the floods and almost all are open for visitors. Although some parts of Ayutthaya province are currently experiencing flooding, major attractions on the island of Ayutthaya, such as the ancient city, Wat Chai Watthanaram, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, and Ayutthaya Floating Market, are not affected by the floods and are open for visitors. Only a few attractions located outside of the island of Ayutthaya have been temporarily closed due to the rising water levels. Wat Tha Ka Rong remains open.

All airports and major transportation links throughout Thailand are operating as per normal. The crest of the flood is currently passing through Bangkok. Most parts of the city have not been affected by the flood, while some flooding is occurring in suburban areas adjacent to the Chao Phraya River. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has comprehensive flood control measures in place and is monitoring the situation closely.

Flash floods and landslide warnings have been issued for 12 provinces: Satun, Trang, Songkhla, Krabi, Chumphon, Chanthaburi, Trat, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Nan, and Mae Hong Son. For tourist safety, access to waterfalls and white-water rafting in flood-prone areas has been temporarily suspended.

Tourists planning to travel to the provinces affected by the floods are advised to check the latest weather forecasts for their destination and confirm arrangements with the transportation providers with which they will be travelling. Tourists can also call the TAT Information Line at 1672 to check local conditions.

Bangkok escapes wrath of floods

Pathum Thani farmers beg BMA to open watergate to ease their suffering.

Bangkok yesterday managed to escape being submerged in floods that have been sweeping through 24 provinces.

Farmers in the neighbouring province of Pathum Thani are calling on authorities to open at least one watergate in the capital so water levels in an overflowing canal can be eased.

"The Hok Wa canal has risen one metre above its banks," Suchat Janchang complained yesterday.

Suchat, who is a farmer in Pathum Thani's Lam Luk Ka district, said more than 1,000 rai of his paddy fields would be in jeopardy if a watergate was not opened soon to let out some of the water. "Have some sympathy for us. We are going to incur huge losses," the 46-year-old said.

Lam Luk Ka district chief Panuwat Jenprasert said if Bangkok authorities continued blocking flood waters, then more than 18,000 rai of the local farmland would be submerged sustaining huge damages.

"Some of them have been flooded for nearly a month now," he said.

After a meeting with relevant authorities on preventing floods in Bangkok and adjacent provinces, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had been well prepared to deal with the situation.

Also present at the meeting were Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra and the provincial governors of Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Chachoengsao.

According to Yingluck, authorities are proceeding in line with His Majesty's advice on water management as they tackle the ongoing flood problems. "We will be pushing the water out of the capital via Lat Pho Canal. It's faster," she said.

With run-offs from the North, the Chao Phraya River has already overflowed in several provinces in the Central region.

In Chai Nat province, raging torrents in the Chao Phraya River knocked down a portion of an embankment and submerged Phaholyothin Road between the 290 and 293 kilometre markers, making that portion of the road impassable to traffic.

According to BMA Drainage and Sewerage Department chief Sanya Sheenimit, up to 3,800 cubic metres of water travelled down Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district yesterday. Ayutthaya is just an hour's drive from Bangkok.

The embankment along the Chao Phraya River in the capital can just about accommodate 3,500 cubic metres of water per second.

The Meteorological Department yesterday forecast heavy downpours until tomorrow in several provinces including Phetchabun, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Surin, Nakhon Nayok and Nakhon Ratchasima.

According to the Emergency Operation Centre for Flooding, Storm and Landslide, floods have already disrupted the lives of more than 1.9 million people.

In Phitsanulok, the mobile medical teams found that 119 residents in the few areas they could access had suicidal tendencies. Relevant officials |are now rushing to provide help.

Meanwhile, Labour Ministry permanent secretary Dr Somkiat Chayasriwong said employees and employers under the social security system would be able to seek soft loans till April 30 if they had been affected by flooding.

Employees can each seek a loan of no more than Bt50,000 at a fixed interest rate of 2.5 per cent for two years. Employers can seek a loan of no more than Bt1 million, at a fixed interest rate of 3 per cent for three years.

Estoy en Patong , Phuket. Desde el día 12 estoy en Tailandia, he recorrido el pais, Kantanabury, Ayutaya, Lopburi, Sukhotai, Chiang Rai y Mai, en vehiculo, es cierto que muchos campos estan inundados, pero no tienes problemas en las carreteras y las ciudades estan perfectas, es un Pais totalmente adaptado a las lluvias, no tengais ningun miedo, me han caido 7 u 8 tormentas muy muy fuertes, pero no impide el desarrollo del viaje, suelen durar media hora o 1 hora maximo.

North-bound trains suspended

Eight train services bound for the North have been suspended because the rail track has been partly flooded in Lop Buri province, State Railway of Thailand public relations chief Nual-anong Wongchan announced on Wednesday.

The eight trains suspended are: rapid train No 111 Bangkok-Den Chai; special express train No 9 Bangkok-Chiang Mai; train No 201 Bangkok-Phitsanulok; special express train No 3 Bangkok-Sawankhalok; train No 209 Bangkok-Ban Takhli; train No 211 Bangkok-Taphanhin; train No 207 Bangkok-Nakhon Sawan; and rapid train No 109 Bangkok-Chiang Mai.

The SRT will keep the water level under watch before making a further announcement whether to resume the services or continue with the suspension.

Passengers can call hotline 1690 for updated information.

ELECCIONES A CORTES GENERALES

20 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2011

ESPAÑOLES RESIDENTES EN EL EXTRANJERO

El próximo domingo 20 de noviembre se celebrarán elecciones a Cortes Generales en España, en las cuales podrán participar los españoles residentes en Tailandia, Camboya, Laos y Birmania inscritos en el Registro de Matrícula Consular de la Embajada de España en Bangkok.

EXPOSICIÓN DE LISTAS Y RECLAMACIONES

- Tal como prevé la Ley , el censo electoral es el cerrado a 1 de julio de 2011, y no contemplará los cambios en las circunscripciones electorales producidos después del 28 de septiembre de 2010.

- Las listas electorales pueden consultarse entre el 3 y el 10 de octubre de 2011 bien en el tablón de anuncios de la Embajada , bien por correo electrónico (emb.bangkok@maec.es), adjuntando copia del DNI o pasaporte en vigor.

- Para facilitar la consulta de las listas, la Embajada per manecerá abierta el sábado 8 y el domingo 9 de octubre, de 10 a 12h.

- A través de la Embajada y en el plazo antes citado, se puede presentar la oportuna reclamación administrativa en caso de exclusión, inclusión indebida o error en los datos. La reclamación deberá ir acompañada de fotocopia del DNI, pasaporte o per miso de conducir, así como declaración explicativa de la elección del municipio de inscripción en el censo electoral.

DOCUMENTACIÓN PARA VOTAR

La nueva Ley Electoral ha modificado el procedimiento de voto: la documentación para votar no será enviada de oficio: es necesario solicitarla mediante impreso oficial y por correo postal, hasta el 22 de octubre inclusive.

El impreso para solicitar la documentación ha sido enviado a los electores por las Delegaciones Provinciales de la Oficina del Censo Electoral, per o puede ser también solicitado en esta Embajada o descargado en la página web del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Coo per ación(www.maec.es). Para facilitar dicho trámite, la Embajada per manecerá abierta el sábado 22 de octubre, de 10 a 12h.

Dicho impreso deberá ser remitido a la correspondiente Delegación Provincial del Censo Electoral, cuyas direcciones figuran asimismo en la página web, acompañado de fotocopia del pasaporte o DNI, o en su defecto, certificación de nacionalidad o de inscripción en el Registro de Matrícula Consular.

La Delegación Provincial remitirá a la dirección señalada las papeletas, el sobre de votación y demás documentación per tinente (dos certificados de inscripción en el CERA, solicitud de reintegro de gastos de franqueo, un sobre en el que deberá figurar la dirección de la Junta Electoral competente y otro con la dirección de la Oficina Consular ).

MODALIDADES PARA EJERCER EL DERECHO DE SUFRAGIO

El elector podrá elegir una de las opciones siguientes:

- Depositar per sonalmente el voto en urna en la Oficina Consular en la que esté inscrito como Residente los días 16, 17 y 18 de noviembre.

El elector deberá incluir en el sobre dirigido a la Junta Electoral la siguiente documentación:

O sobre de votación con la papeleta de la candidatura escogida

O un certificado de inscripción en el censo

O fotocopia del pasaporte o DNI, o en su defecto, certificación de nacionalidad o de inscripción en el Registro de Matrícula Consular.

- Enviar su voto por correo certificado a la Oficina Consular en la que esté inscrito no más tarde del 15 de noviembre.

El elector deberá incluir en el sobre dirigido a la Junta Electoral la siguiente documentación:

O sobre de votación con la papeleta de la candidatura escogida

O un certificado de inscripción en el censo

O solicitud de reintegro de gastos de franqueo

O fotocopia del pasaporte o DNI, o en su defecto, certificación de nacionalidad o de inscripción en el Registro de Matrícula Consular.

NOTA:

Los españoles residentes en el extranjero e inscritos en el CERA que vayan a encontrarse temporalmente en España durante el proceso electoral podrán solicitar el voto por correo a partir de la fecha de la convocatoria hasta el 10 de noviembre, sin que eso suponga su baja como residente en el extranjero.

Para ello, deberán cumplimentar una solicitud disponible en cualquier oficina de Correos de España y dirigirla a la Delegación Provincial correspondiente. Recibida la documentación, el voto será enviado por correo certificado no más tarde del 16 de noviembre.

Además, la Embajada estará abierta para trámites relativos a las elecciones el sábado 8 y el domingo 9 de octubre de 10 a 12h, y el sábado 22 de octubre.

La Embajada estará cerrada los días 12 de octubre, 24 de octubre y 1 de noviembre.

Sawati, como esta el tema del tiempo y las inundaciones? las noticias que llegan no son muy alentadoras que digamos...

Voy en tres días y todavía no tengo nada claro.
¿Sería recomendable cambiar de destino?

Me voy en 15 días y estare en bangkok, ayuthaya, chiang mai, chiang rai y phuket.

Nosotros nos marchamos el día 28 de Bangkok y no llegamos a ver el río así , eso sí, habíamos comentado que era el año que más alto veíamos el río

Traslado el mensaje al hilo adecuado. Si miras los mensajes anteriores creo que tienes parte de tu contestación. En Bangkok hasta el mismo 28 de Septiembre no tuvimos ningún problema. Que yo sepa en Phuket tampoco hay problemas. De lo demás no te puedo comentar puesto que solo estuvimos en Samui y Bangkok.
