Brasilia comparte con ciudades como San Petersburgo, Washington, DC, Canberra o Putrajaya, la particularidad de haber sido construida de la nada, convirtiéndose directamente en una gran ciudad.
Situada en la región Centro-Oeste, en una extensión cedida por el Estado de Goiás, Brasilia está bordeada por los ríos Preto, al este, y Descoberto, al oeste.
Es desde el siglo XIX cuando existen los primeros documentos que reflejan la intención de crear una capital en el interior del país, pero no fue hasta el 21 de abril de 1960 cuando se inauguró la ciudad de Brasilia, tras 2.000 días de trabajos intensos, y cumpliendo la decisión tomada por el entonces presidente del país Juscelino Kubitschek que convocó un concurso para seleccionar los artífices del proyecto de la ciudad, así fueron elegidos el urbanista Lucio Costa y el arquitecto Oscar Niemeyer que firma las principales obras arquitectónicas de la nueva ciudad.
El nuevo Distrito Federal atrajo a miles de trabajadores de todas las regiones del país, los llamados "candangos", responsables de la construcción de la ciudad. 27 años después de su fundación, el esfuerzo de todos los que colaboraron en esta obra obtuvo su reconocimiento por la UNESCO declarando en 1987 a Brasilia como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

Brasilia esta pensada en torno a dos ejes principales que se cortan en forma de cruz formando un gran pájaro. El eje principal esta reservado a las funciones de la ciudad, con la Plaza Tres Poderes (ejecutivo, legislativo, judicial)en un de sus lados . A ambos lados se distribuyen zonas residenciales, divididas en «supercuadras».
Qué ver -parece un lugar para darle uso al gran angular!
El Eje monumental, abarca un área en el centro de la ciudad de Brasilia; el área verde se encuentra rodeada por dos avenidas muy extensas a lo ancho capaces de permitir el traslado de ocho carriles vehiculares.
Con el Congreso Nacional y el Palacio dos Arcos o Itamaraty
También en el eje monumental el Complejo Cultural de la República (en portugués Complexo Cultural da República) es un centro dedicado a la cultura con instituciones como la Biblioteca Nacional de Brasilia y el Museo Nacional de la República

Plaza de los Tres Poderes
El nombre de esta plaza se debe a los tres edificios del estado que alberga, estos son: el Palacio de Planalto (poder Ejecutivo), el Congreso Nacional (poder legislativo) y el Supremo Tribunal Federal (poder judicial). Esta plaza es muy visitada y es uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos de la ciudad de Brasilia.
El Palacio de Planalto (Palácio do Planalto en portugués) se ubica en la Plaza de los Tres Poderes y es el lugar de trabajo oficial del Presidente de la república.
Palacio de la Alvorada Es la residencia oficial del Presidente de Brasil.

Lago artificial construido con la finalidad de incrementar las reservas de agua disponibles en la región.
