Tuesday, July 19, 2005 (5:00 pm) Hello folks, the people of Cancun.Bz hired me to make a site inspection to the area affected by the Hurricane Emily that recently hitted the Mayan Riviera. No other electronic media is offering this information on the internet and they are just publishing sensacionalist news and taking as background for their news videos and pictures from past hurricanes where shows disaster and devastation. This information is real and objective, I was hotel manager for 15 years, actually I'm the owner of travel agency in Cancun and living here for more than 27 years, this report is serious and here is what I saw this morning:
Puerto Morelos. I started the site inspection in Puerto Morelos. On this area the hotels are Paraiso de la Bonita, Desire Resort & Spa, Azul Beach Hotel, Melia Paradisus Puerto Morelos, Ceiba del Mar, Reef club, Secrets Excellence Riviera and others.
Report: All the hotels on that area are working normally, no damages in most of them except in thatched roofs but they will get fixed in a couple of days. They have electricity, water and all the services, some of them are haveing problem with the telephone lines but this will be fixed at any moment. We recommend that if you have reservation for those hotels or Puerto Morelos hotels don't cancel your reservations.
Punta Maroma. The hotels on this area are: El Dorado Royale, Mayan palace, Carrousel Villas Paraiso, Iberostar Playa Paraiso, Maroma Resort & Spa and Venta Club Playa Maroma. Those hotels are working normally and the damages are minor those ones can be repaired in a couple of days. If you have reserved on those hotels don't be afraid to keep your reservation.
Playa del Carmen. This area hosts the following hotels: Bravo Club El Mandarin, Secrets Capri, Maya Koba, El caracol Village, Capitan Laffite, Kaillum Resort, Qualton Club Riviera Maya, Ikal del Mar, Las Palapas. Shangri La and downtown hotels. Those hotels are operating normally too , minor damages to facilities, some of them had thatched roofs as decoration only but nothing that can not be repaired in 2 or 3 days. Electricity is back, they have water and all the services, beaches were beautiful today. I walked along the 5th avenue today and drove on the city and everything seems nice except for some trees and branches but the government and hoteliers are cleaning the streets. If you are going to stay on any of those hotels please do it.
PlayaCar. This is the hotel zone of Playa del Carmen and residential area, it has a golf course and hosts some of the most beautiful hotels in the area. I entered the area and there was a lot of trees and branches spreaded on the paved roads but also an army of workers cleaning the area. I stopped hotel by hotel and asked the manager on duty or the front desk manager about the situation of ther hotels and this is the report:
Riu Hotels.- All the hotels of this chain are operating normally, their facilities don't present any visible damage and there were tourists in the lobby, restaurants and beaches so everything looked like a normal day.
Gala Resorts.- This hotel is closed due to damages on some parts of the hotels, I saw people working on the area, I asked about re-opening date and they said they don't have that information at that time.
Royal Hideaway.- Closed, full of workers, didn't want to allow the access and don't have a re-opening date actually.
Wyndham Viva Azteca.- Closed, full of workers, didn't want to allow the access and don't have a re-opening date actually.
Reef Playacar. Closed, full of workers, didn't want to allow the access and don't have a re-opening date actually.
The golf course looks like fine, some trees and branches on the grass but nothing can not be solved in a short period of time.
Private houses and villas on the area look okay, the access roads are in very good conditions.
On each hotel we left a letter asking the hotel managers to send us a full report about the status of their hotels in order we can publish that information on this page. Personally I think the hotels closed at this time will be ready to operate in one or two weeks because no visible damages are shown except on the roofs and some palapas on the beach. Before you cancel your vacation for those hotels we strongly suggest you to contact your travel agency or wait for the response of the hoteliers to our letter, we will publish here the report for each hotel. Important: Some hotels in Playa del Carmen and Playacar are working but they still are having problems with the telephone service so if you want to contact them be patient that it fill be fixed in a short period of time.
After Playacar I took the south road to Tulum, after 10 minutes drive I really saw the damage that the hurricane caused on this area. Thousands of fallen trees, electricity poles cutted in half like plastiline, electric lines on the ground, a microwave tower twisted like a small copper wire, myriad of workers of the electric company fixing the poles, lot of activity but about the hotels....
Xcaret Park and Flamingo Xcaret.- The park and the hotel are closed, no access is allowed but we will speak with the head office to grab the information of status and re-opening date.
Puerto Aventuras.- This is painful for me to report this but Puerto Aventuras is devastated, no electricity, no water, no services at all. I recall this exclusive place for its golf course, nice roads, ever green jungle, exclusive hotels, all this has gone, this morning it looked like a junk yard , trees spreaded everywhere, trees under cars, debris everywhere. I personally think Puerto Aventuras will not recover itself for several months. I advise you to cancel your trip to Puerto Aventuras or change it to Cancun or Playa del Carmen instead. The hotels I visited were The Omni, Punta Serena, Sunscape Puerto Aventuras and the Oasis.
On this area another hotels are located, those ones are Aventura Spa Palace and Xpu-Ha Palace, those hotels are closed too for major damages and they don't have a date to re-open at this moment. If you had plans for vacation on those hotels I suggest you to contact them to their headquartes to inquiry further information. Email them al info@palaceresorts.com
Continued my trip to the south most of the hotels are damaged and no estimated re-opening date was available at that moment but all of them presented serious damages on roofs and facilities, I think it will takes weeks even a couple months to get the damages fixed, the landscaping and gardening is a real disaster, it will not be a nice view for the tourists to see a dry jungle and garbage everywhere, please give those hotels some time to recover. No electricity, water, telephone at this time. We will keep track the status of each hotel over the course of the next days and publish the hotel comments in a special section of the weather main page of cancun.bz

Viajamos a RM el 29 de Julio. En un principio no vamos a anular el viaje. Dicen que los Riu están bastante bien y no hay problema (vamos al Lupita). Me preocupa un poco como estarán las carreteras, ruinas, etc, pero soy optimista. Supongo que poco a poco nos llegará información sobre ello. Los que salís en esas fechas ¿que tenéis pensado hacer? Los que sigáis adelante, estaría bien ir conociéndonos y formando un grupito para las excursiones (no nos vamos a dejar amargar las vacaciones por un poco de airecillo, por muy huracán que sea, jijiji).

La información sobre el kantenah y el collonial no es correcta, estos hoteles SI ESTAN ABIERTOS aunque con limitaciones, podies ver el mensaje del director del hotel (Felipe) en otro de los temas credos por mi. La zona es cierto que esta bastante mal.

Buenos días a todos, ayer nos llamaron de la agencia de viajes para preguntarnos que queriamos hacer, pues nos comentaron que la zona está bastante mal, aunque los hoteles se dan prisa para que todo esté perfecto. Pero claro, pagas un dinero para poder disfrutar de una magnificas vacaciones y ahora estamos dudando que hacer. Nosotros nos vamos a finales de Agosto, y para esas fechas puede que la cosa este mejor, pero claro.... No como antes. Ayer nos dieron varias opciones, porque queremos ir a Caribe, nos dijeron Cuba y Punta Cana.
Que hacemos? aconsejarnos porfavor porque realmente estamos muy indecisos, no nos atrae la idea de ir y no poder disfrutar del pais como dios manda.
La zona en la que teniamos reservada era en Puerto Aventuras, la mas afectada. En fin, os agradeceria cualquier tipo de consejo o recomendación.

Riu Palace
8 ton buoy on the beach. Vegetation stripped. 1st floor rooms flooded. Glass above lobby bar broken.

Riu Yucatan
Lots of debris. Sand around building blocks. Large trees in pool. Beach 1/2 the size it was.

Riu Tequila
Pool is closed. Damage to gardens. 60% of the restaurants and bars are open. Gradually getting back to operations.

Secrets Excellence
Damage to some windows in the Excellence Club. Excellence Club area is closed for a few days. 3 of 7 restaurants have damage and are closed. Should accept guests by Tuesday.

Secrets Capri
In a clean up mode, minimal damage. 100% functional.

Sunscape Puerto Aventuras
A few rooms are damaged. Two outdoor restaurants are damaged. Still assessing damages but resort is NOT open. Guests will be sent to Dreams in Cancun, Secrets Excellence or Secrets Capri.

Sunscape Tulum
Broken windows in oceanfront rooms and outdoor restaurant. 1 restaurant lost it's roof. Beach erosion. Open by 7/20.

*NOTE* Even though they are adults only properties, both Capri and Excellence ARE accepting families that have been displaced by the closing of the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras for as long as necessary.

Iberostar Maya
Debris. Lobby damaged. Beach erosion.

Iberostar Paraiso Beach/Del Mar
2 restaurants are damaged. Lobby bar damaged. Beach erosion. Kids club and convention center closed.

Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal
Least amount of damage of all the IB*'s. Pool and beach has debris. Kids club and restaurant damaged.

It will take about a week to fully clean up the above IB* resorts but they are accepting guests.

Iberostar Cozumel
Badly damaged. Closed for several months.

Occidental Grand Cozumel
Closed until December.

Palladium
Closed. Should reopen in a week, perhaps a little more.

Hotel is open but operating on limited facilities, as requested by Apple Vacations that they stay open. Not sure if they are accepting guests from anyone other than Apple. The jungles and lobbies were destroyed. Lobby on Colonial side should reopen in two weeks. The theater palapa is destroyed, theater should be open in two weeks. Only one bar (disco) open right now, other bars will reopen in a few days. New beach bar is OK. Other beach bar lost it's ceiling. All beach palapas and main pool palapas are down. Main pool closed, will reopen when repairs have been made. Adult pool and spa pool have some palapas left. Adult pool and spa pool are empty and will reopen after repairs to the tile are made...and this will be before the main pool which will take longer to repair. Palm trees on beach severly damaged. Windows in kids club destroyed. Most restaurants are fine, and open.

Omni Puerto Aventuras
Closed until 8/8.

Copacabana
The eye passed over this hotel. No roof in the lobby. Closed, not sure when it will reopen yet.

Bahia Principe Tulum/Akumal
Closed for 15 days (?)

El Dorado Seaside Suites
Water damage. Vegetation stripped. Open by 7/21, will be 75% operational.

Azul Resort and Spa
Open and accepting guests

El Dorado Royale

Reef Coco Beach
Lots of debris. Lots of roof damage. Most of roof and lots of sand in the pool. Buffet restaurant damaged.

No power or water. No phones. Theater almost destroyed. Many chandliers fell. Lots of downed trees. *Should* be up and running in 72 hours as per management.

Aventura Spa Palace
Closed until further notice. Guests moved to Moon Palace or Palace properties in Cancun.

Xpu Ha Palace
Closed for 8-10 weeks. Guests moved to Moon Palace or Palace properties in Cancun.

Said to be reopening by 7/22 but with "limited facilities". Damage to theater and landscaping.

Falta más de un mes para iros, en ese tiempo les da tiempo de poder arreglar todos los desperfectos que se hayan podido producir. Yo iría: merece la pena. Por cierto, ¿sóis de Jerez?

Esta claro que la zona sur es la mas afectada y cuanto mas al norte menos problemas, ya cada uno que sabe donde esta su hotel podra tomar las medidas, yo creo que viajar en las dos proximas semanas al sur de la riviera maya es tirar un poco el dinero.

Yo voy en Octubre y al Riu Yucatan, osea que no estoy demasiado preocupado.

Nosotros también nos vamos a Riviera Maya a finales de Agosto y de momento no vamos a cancelar nada, ya que en la zona lo restauran todo bastante pronto, pero si tienes dudas llama al Hotel donde vayas y les preguntas, son bastante sinceros. De todos modos donde ha afectado el Huracán, en la península del Yucatán, normalmente no suelen llegar huracanes tan a menudo como al resto del caribe, es más problable que los huracanes que quedan por venir afecten mas a Punta Cana, Cuba y Jamaica, que a Mexico.
Quisiera decirte también que es la época de huracanes en la zona y que cuando se va a la zona hay que asumir que te puede tocar alguno, yo ya he ido 5 veces por la zona del caribe y hasta ahora (tocaré madera) no me ha tocado vivir ninguno, lo más cercano siempre han sido coletazos del huracán y tormentas tropicales.
En definitiva no seré yo quién os quite la idea, en caso que decidáis no ir, pero es una zona que merece mucho la pena para ser visitada, la gente es encantadora.

MOMENTO NO SE PREVEEN MAS HURACANES EN LA ZONA.
SE SI ANULA EL VIAJE YA HAY GASTOS PORQUE EL GOBIERNO HA DADO VISTO BUENO A LA ZONA.

La verdad es que no nos gusta la idea de cancelarlo pues estamos muy ilusionados, lo que si miraremos es cambiar de hotel porque el nuestro ( no recuerdo el nombre, eso lo lleva mejor mi mujer ) se que estava situado en Puerto Aventuras y por ahí la cosa está mas chunguilla. Iré a ver que se puede hacer en la agencia, espero me cambien el hotel.
Por cierto, no somos de Jerez, somos de Barcelona, pero que día os vais?
I a que hotel? a ver si podemos coincidir , será mas animado.
Nosotros salimos el día 27 de Agosto.

He encontrado la siguiente nota de prensa en la página de los hoteles Riu, que me parece bastante esperanzadora, aunque por otro lado ya me habían dicho que esa es la tónica general en ese tipo de establemcientos y en situaciones como la que nos preocupa a todos.

Esta es la nota:

Los hoteles de RIU afectados por el huracán estarán plenamente operativos en 48 horas 19/7/2005


Una brigada de emergencia arregla los desperfectos de los 8 establecimientos en el Caribe mexicano



Los ocho establecimientos de la cadena RIU en el Caribe mexicano (3 en Cancún y 5 en Playa del Carmen), estarán plenamente operativos a partir de este jueves.

En las próximas 48 horas la cadena concluirá la limpieza de las piscinas, la recogida de cristales y escombros de los jardines y el arreglo de las instalaciones exteriores, secuelas del paso del huracán Emily.

En todo momento los hoteles de RIU han mantenido los servicios mínimos básicos en aplicación de las directrices de su manual antihuracanes, que da la máxima prioridad a la seguridad y confort de los clientes durante la emergencia.

Una brigada especial antiemergencias procede en la actualidad a realizar las reparaciones de manera que la actividad en los hoteles estará totalmente normalizada en breve plazo.

Los resorts de la cadena RIU recibirán esta noche los primeros nuevos clientes tras el huracán.

El manual antihuracanes de RIU data de 1996 y fue elaborado en República Dominicana. Dos años más tarde fue reelaborado y adaptado al entorno del Caribe mexicano con motivo de la implantación de la cadena en esa región.

El manual prevé medidas de prevención, pautas de comportamiento y sistema de coordinación de labores a través de la figura especial del director anithuracán, que gestiona la emergencia desde el escenario de los hechos.

Yo he contactado con los palace resort y me confirman que el Xpu-Ha y el Aventura tiene para rato pero que repartira a los turistas en los demas hoteles de la cadena, mi unica preocupación es que termine durmiendo en una hamaca de la piscina porque vamos a ser mas que en la guerra....

Aquì les tengo noticias acerca del estado en que se encuentra la Riviera Maya, la he tomado del Diario de Yucatàn, espero que les sea ùtil ya que las cosas estàn mejorando poco a poco.

Gracias Janet, pero siempre hablan de los hoteles y no del resto, aunque el hotel donde voy se que no tiene ningún daño me preocupa el estado de los parques naturales y alrredeores, por ejemplo se que x-caret está muy mal y no es cosa de una semana.

Yo ya estuve el año pasado e hice muchas excursiones y este año voy a disfrutar mas del hotel (moon palace) y paseos por Cancun pero me preocupa tener que pedir turno como en la carniceria para meterme en la piscina ya que allí iran los del Xpu-Ha y el Aventura y creo que estaremos como "piojos en costura" pero bueno aun así yo voy porque será una delicia volver a sentir el calor de su gente, el cual seguro no se ha llevado Emily, y ver sus playas de arena blanca y aguas cristalinas, con eso tengo suficiente.

P.D. Ufff se me olvidaba, ¡¡¡¡esas piñas coladas que preparan!!!! ains si se me cae la babilla de pensarlo....¡¡que le den a la Emilia y lo que haya podido hacer!!! yo vuelvo el 14 de agosto

Hola a todos, yo y mi novio vamos el 28 de agosto al hotel paradisus y m preocupa de que no esten bien las playas pq es mucho dinero que te gastas, si alguien va al mismo hotel por esas fechas....? pero bueno intentaremos pasarlo muy bien.
