Existen dos aeropuertos regionales: Stokmarknes, en Skagen, y el aeropuerto de Andenes en Andøya.

The drive between Vesterålen’s two main settlements is one of Northern Norway’s most atmospheric, its wild and isolated coasts evoking both desolation and surpreme awe. Although Andenes lies northwest of Harstad, it’s reached by heading south out of town along the E10, then it’s 50km southwest along the fjord to the turning for the Lødingen ferry and a further 50km to the bridge that spans the sound over to Sortland. On the near side of this Sortland bridge, Highway 82 begins its 100-kilometre trek north, snaking along the craggy edge of Hinnøya island before crossing a second bridge over to humdrum Risøyhamn, the only Hurtigruten stop on Andøya, the most northerly of the Vesterålen islands. Beyond Risøyhamn, the scenery is much less dramatic, as the mountains give way to hills in the west and a vast, peaty moor in the east. Highway 82 strips across this moorland and, despite offering panoramic views of the mountains back on the mainland, it’s an uneventful journey on to Andenes. If you have time to spare, consider taking the more scenic route along the west coast of Andøya, branching off from Highway 82 just past Risøyhamn to pass through a series of tiny villages like Nordmela, Stave and Bleik (see Puffin safaris).
El viaje entre los dos asentamientos principales de Vesterålen es uno de los más atmosféricos del norte de Noruega, sus costas salvajes y aisladas evocan tanto desolación como asombro supremo.
Aunque Andenes se encuentra al noroeste de Harstad, se llega saliendo de la ciudad hacia el sur por la E10, luego se recorren 50 km al suroeste a lo largo del fiordo hasta el desvío del ferry de Lødingen y otros 50 km hasta el puente que cruza el estrecho hasta Sortland.
En el lado cercano de este puente de Sortland, la autopista 82 comienza su viaje de 100 kilómetros hacia el norte, serpenteando a lo largo del borde escarpado de la isla de Hinnøya antes de cruzar un segundo puente hacia el monótono Risøyhamn, la única parada de Hurtigruten en Andøya, la más septentrional de Vesterålen.
Más allá de Risøyhamn, el paisaje es mucho menos dramático, ya que las montañas dan paso a colinas en el oeste y a un vasto páramo de turba en el este.
La autopista 82 atraviesa este páramo y, a pesar de ofrecer vistas panorámicas de las montañas en el continente, es un viaje sin incidentes hacia Andenes. Si tiene tiempo de sobra, considere tomar la ruta más pintoresca a lo largo de la costa oeste de Andøya, desviándose de la autopista 82 justo después de Risøyhamn para pasar por una serie de pequeños pueblos como Nordmela, Stave y Bleik (ver safaris de frailecillos).

Además del Hurtigruten -paradas en Stokmarknes, Sortland y Risøyhamn- y la carretera, la opción vuelos
El aeropuerto más grande de Vesterålen es el aeropuerto de Stokmarknes, Skagen.clasificado como "regional".
Este aeropuerto cuenta con varios vuelos directos diarios de Widerøe tanto a Bodø como a Tromsø, desde donde se puede llegar a Oslo.
Hay planes para expandir el aeropuerto y abrir vuelos directos a Oslo y Trondheim, pero por ahora, toca hacer transbordo en Bodø o Tromsø.
Un aeropuerto más grande, a unas dos horas al este en autobús o automóvil desde Sortland, es el aeropuerto de Harstad/Narvik Evenes -principalmente al servicio de Harstad y Narvik.
Tanto Norwegian como SAS tienen vuelos directos a Oslo. Además, hay vuelos a Bodø, Tromsø y Trondheim.
