You may know Vietnam for its tasty and easy-to-eat dishes like Pho, Banh mi, Bun Cha,... Do you know that this country has many weird food in Vietnam which can strike terror into your heart.

1 - Mam tom (fermented shrimp paste)
Top-notch on the list of the weirdest food in Vietnam that almost all travelers are scared to try. As a condiment for dipping like fish sauce, this pasty mixture made by fermenting raw shrimps with salt gives out a much stronger odor. It is said to be similar to the smell of rotten foods or dead mouse bodies. The stink will continue to stick to the breath, hair and clothes of the eater for so long after eating. This is also the very reason why shrimp paste becomes an sworn enemy of a remarkable number of people. However, to those who are in love with it, “mam tom” is an indispensable part of dishes such as dog meat, cold rice vermicelli with tofu and shrimp paste, snail vermicelli soup, crab paste vermicelli soup,...

2 - Thit chuot (Rat meat)
In Vietnam, rat meat is not served as a daily and popular food like pork, beef or chicken. However, in some areas like Tu Son city (Bac Ninh province), Hoai Duc district, Thach That district (Hanoi), it is a special dish that always appears on the worship tray or in big or small parties of the local people. Rat meat receives a lot of preference from consumers, of which evidence is its good sales. You may wonder if they aren’t afraid of catching bubonic plague. Actually yes, they are, yet the reason they still take it is that it is rice-field rat, not sewer one, hence the possibility that it has pathogens is modest.

3 - Thang co (Horse meat & offal hot pot)
“Thang co” is a dish that is attached to the Northwest of Vietnam. The dish is cooked by making the best use of the horse's body. Everything, even the colon is put into a pot and simmered with typical spices for hours. The recipe and the unpleasant smell makes almost all visitors even the boldest men concerned with hygiene. In fact, all the ingredients must go through a careful preliminary process before being served, thus there is no need to worry.

4 - Nam pia
At the end of the list of top weirdest food in Vietnam is Nam Pia. “Nam pia”- a special dish of the mountainous northwestern Vietnam is a real challenge to anyone. The meaning of its name has revealed the horror elements: “nam pia '' in the Vietnamese ethic language means “young feces soup”. What is more disgusting than food made from...crap? But, what is called “young feces' ' is in fact, the fluid in the small intestine of the cattle (in this case it is herbivore such as cow, goat, buffalo,...). The local people suppose it is the finest, most quintessential part of the animal since it is the food digested and about to absorb into blood veins to create energy for the body. Therefore, this dish is really nutritious. One more surprising thing ís that it has never caused a stomach ache to anyone.

Portuguese Fortress

Portuguese Castle is one of the remaining architectures left behind from the time of the Portuguese occupancy of the island in the 16th century to maintain control over the Strait of Hormoz, some locals believe the name for some Islands around Qeshm and Hormoz originated from Portuguese roots with the mean of “good economy Island”.

Besides being endowed with immense beauty, Kerala is also famous for its lovely and colorful festivals and customs. Festival season is the best time for a visit to Kerala. Besides Onam and Thrissur Pooram, the festivals that stand as attractions in Kerala are Vishu, Payippad Jelotsavam, Makaravillakku at Sabarimala etc.

Malayali New Year day is celebrated as Vishu. Viewing good things on this day is considered to be propitious and brings good fortune for the year round. The most important part of the festival is the preparation of the Kani, which is the lucky sight or gift, and this custom is being followed from many generations. A grantha or palm-leaf manuscript, a gold ornament, new cloth, flowers from the Konna tree, silver coins in a cup, a split coconut, cucumber, fruits like mango and jackfruit are arranged on a large dish made of bell metal. Two burning lamps add to the beauty of the Kani. Members of the family are taken blindfolded to the Kani and view it first thing in the morning. A feast is arranged for all the members of the house.

Payippad Jelotsavam festival has a religious significance and is held on the Prathista day ceremony of Haripad Subramanya temple. The festival starts from the Onam festival day and goes on for three days. On the first two days snake boat precessions are carried out and the third day is marked by snake boat races.

Makaravillakku at Sabarimala is the other major festival that attracts lakhs of devotees from all over South India. The presiding deity here is Lord Ayyappa also known as Dharma Sastha.

Travel Tips

The banking system is very poor. No ATM, No Travelers' Cheque, No Credit Card at all. Everybody will accept only US$ cash and it must be new and clean. If the notes are torn, dirty or old, nobody will accept it.

Please make sure you have enough cash with you.

When you change the money on the black market, 100US$ notes can get better rate. 1 US$ = 750 Kyats for 100$ note. Smaller notes 1US$ = 740 Kyats
The Euros and SGD doesn't work as well as US$. You can convert it into US$ with very bad rate. 1 Euro = 1030 kyats

Kyats can be used only for food, shopping and local transportation.

As it is our winter, warm clothes is essential. Especially in Inle Lake area. Sometime it goes down up to 8 in the night time.

Your mobile phone doesn't work here.

Electricity: 220-240 V. Difficult to use 3 pin plugs. Multi- adaptor is recommended.

You do not need to worry about Malaria, but recommend bringing some mosquito-repellent.

The typical food will cost 2000-3000 kyats/ meal. The Chinese dishes are more expensive and will cost about 4000 kyats/ meal. A bottle of beer will cost about 2000 kyats.
A bottle of water will cost about 300 kyats.

Very few wi- fi spots for the lap top.
