When transferring, you only need to collect your baggage and check it in again for your connecting flight, if:
You have purchased two or more tickets from different airlines that have dissimilar conditions.
You transfer from a Iberia flight to a domestic flight (when country regulations require travelers to comply with customs and immigration procedures at their first point of entry,for example in the USA).
You arrive at one airport and your connecting flight departs from another airport.
Your transfer lasts longer than 12 hours or your next flight departs the next day.
Part of your journey is by bus or rail.
Passengers will be advised at the airport of origin regarding where they should collect their luggage.

Desde España me han hecho el favor de llamar a Iberia y me han dicho que podría solicitar que al facturar el equipaje que me lo facturasen sólo hasta Madrid, que es el aeropuerto de escala.

Al final volé con Avianca, con esta compañía si la escala es de más de seis horas no ponen problemas para facturar las maletas hasta el destino de la escala, así que compré un billete con escala de 7 horas y no tuve ningún problema para facturar las maletas hasta España y "perder" el siguiente vuelo.
